Grants for stairlifts

If you require the use of a stairlift but are not in the financial position to order one, you could be eligible to apply for a grant from your local authority. Being eligible for the Disabled Facilities Grant means you could get help towards the cost of installing a stairlift from the local council. To be eligible for a stairlift grant, the council assesses your situation and a grant can be awarded if the installation of a stairlift will make life easier and improve your overall living environment. Please visit the Direct.Gov website for more information regarding grant eligibility and the various home adaptations available to meet your mobility needs. You can also contact your local council for more information. To find out more about stairlift costs, please visit our stairlift prices page.

Stairlifts and VAT

When searching online for a new stairlift, you are likely to be eligible for zero-rated VAT when buying any type of stairlift. When purchasing or enquiring about a new stairlift, there are two different types of VAT exemption that can provide a discount to the overall price. These exemptions apply to people who are disabled or chronically ill, as well as to all seniors over the age of 60.

If you are disabled or suffer from a chronic illness and are applying for a stairlift, then this VAT exemption will cover you for personal and domestic use. Disabled or chronically sick applies for the following:

  • A long-term mental or physical impairment which has an adverse impact upon your ability to carry out everyday activities and tasks. This exemption includes certain health conditions such as osteoporosis, arthritis and various heart conditions.
  • A health condition that is medically certified as a chronic sickness. This includes diabetes.
  • A terminally ill person.

For a comprehensive list of conditions and exemptions for VAT relief, you can find more information on the HM Revenue & Customs website under notice 701/7 VAT Relief. You can also call the National Advice Service on 0845 010 9000 for any other questions you may have.

When applying for VAT relief, it is essential that the applicant is aware of their eligibility before finalising and completing the declaration. Any stairlift product ordered must be for that user only, or installed in a domestic setting.
